“1. What do you propose to do? [20 words]
Create a web service for the public to data mine their bank statements as social groups for a common good.
2. Is anyone doing something like this now and how is your project different? [30 words]
There are other services that aggregate financial data for individuals, such as Mint.com, but none empowering networks of people to publicly data mine themselves as whole groups.
3. Describe the network with which you intend to build or work. [50 words]
The service fuses aspects of social networks and financial networks into a hybrid network with the properties of both. The social network consists of people with common interests who need big financial data to tell their stories. The financial network consists of the banking infrastructure that underpins modern payment systems and the transaction data it captures when we spend.
4. Why will it work? [100 words]
A lot of people want to tell their stories using big financial data— media producers, journalists, businesses, non-profits, activists and individuals— but have poor access to the information, tools, and know-how required to do so. My web service will address that need by: Generating new feeds of information about specific types of consumption.
Calculating financial trends across large populations.
Comparing individual behavior to a larger group’s.
Tracking the flow of money through geographic communities.
Disclosing financial information in a trusted public forum.
Publishing compelling charts, graphs and interactive media to the web.
Providing web based user interfaces to accomplish all this.
5. Who is working on it? [100 words]
Ryan O’Toole is an entrepreneur, engineer and product designer of creative web and mobile technologies. He was Co-Founder and VP of Product Development at Ginger.io, a TechStars Boston 2011 company which raised $1.7M and was Grand Winner of the Sanfi-Aventis Data Diabetes Design Challenge 2011. His master’s thesis work at MIT won honorable mention at the Knight-Batten Journalism Innovation Award 2010. Ryan has a master’s degree from the MIT Media Lab’s Center for Civic Media (‘10) and a B.A. from U.C. San Diego in Interdisciplinary Computing in the Arts and Music, minor Computer Science and Engineering (‘03).
6. What part of the project have you already built? [100 words]
There is a beta version of the web application which has data collection, data filtering, data visualization and web publishing components. It runs on a standard set of open source applications: Linux, Apache, PHP, PostgreSQL, and Xulrunner (Mozilla/FireFox). The source code is publicly available on GitHub and licensed with the Affero General Public License. 50 users are enrolled to test the beta application.
7. How would you sustain the project after the funding expires? [50 words]
My goal in seeking funding is to launch a company that can execute on the product vision and increase the application’s user base through improvements to engineering, design, marketing, and business development. Long-term revenue will come from 3rd party fees, sales referrals, advertising, and analytics services. Additional sources of grant and venture funding will also be pursued.
